Financing assistance available for tree removal in north Minneapolis
Since the May 22 tornado, the City of Minneapolis and the Park and Recreation Board have removed thousands of fallen trees from the streets, parks and boulevards in north Minneapolis. Homeowners who still have fallen trees on their property are responsible for their removal, but that work can often be expensive.
The City of Minneapolis recognizes that tree removal can create hardship for those trying to get back on their feet, so the City has a financing option available to help folks who can’t afford to pay for the work up-front. With a homeowner’s permission, the City can finance the removal of the tree, have the work done, and assess the costs to the homeowner’s property taxes, spreading out payments over five years.
To be eligible for this service, property owners must meet the following criteria:
- The tree must be on private property. This program does not apply to boulevard trees, which are handled by the Park and Recreation Board
- The property owner must sign a consent form prior to the tree removal
- The tree must be removed by the City's hazardous tree contractor
Homeowners who are eligible and would like to participate should call 311 to start the process.
The cost of the tree removal, along with an administrative/inspection fee, and an annual 8 percent interest rate will be assessed to the homeowner’s property taxes over a period of five years. Property owners have the option to prepay the special assessment for tree removal by Nov. 29, 2011. Interest will not be charged to those who prepay their special assessments.
