Poetry contest asks: What’s your vision for Nicollet Mall?
The Minneapolis Downtown Development District (DID) is sponsoring a poetry contest to inspire, encourage and motivate the community to share their visions for the future of Nicollet Mall. The DID is pouring new sidewalks on three block faces of Nicollet Mall this year for an interim period while the DID and the City turn to envisioning the future of our community’s "Main Street."
The DID wants to engage everyone in our community, young and old alike, to start thinking about what the Nicollet Mall could be. The DID and Open Book Minnesota are hosting a poetry contest to celebrate the future of Minneapolis's most iconic street.
To enter, submit a short original poem (and entry form) using Nicollet Mall as your theme and include one or more of the following key words:
CHANGE VISION VIBRANT COMMUNITY FUTURE GATHER COMMERCE
There are five competition categories: adults, seniors (65+) and youth (grades pre-K-2, 3-8 and 9-12). Poems must be in English, feature the theme, be no more than 30 words in length, and include at least one of the key words. The contest is free to enter, and winners in each category will be chosen by a jury.
Winning poems will be showcased on signs to be placed along the new concrete sidewalk between Washington and Fourth Street on Nicollet Mall. Prizes range from $20 - $50 and can be used at Downtown establishments, along with a framed version of the poem.
Visit www.minneapolisdid.com to pickup an entry form and for more information about the contest. Poems can be mailed or delivered to DID, 81 S. 9th St., Suite 260, Minneapolis, MN 55402. Contest drop-boxes are also located at Open Book and The Downtown Library. The deadline for submission of poems is July 22.
