Minneapolis’ IT contract with Unisys wins national recognition

The City of Minneapolis and Outsourcing Center recognized Minneapolis and Unisys with the "Best Partnership Award" – the organization’s top honor – in its annual Outsourcing Excellence Awards.

Through this improved relationship, Unisys and Minneapolis have made local government more efficient and accessible to City residents. Since 2003, the City of Minneapolis has saved in excess of $18 million by outsourcing its primary IT infrastructure to Unisys as a way to streamline its organization and save resources. In 2004, Minneapolis and Unisys received the "Best First Steps" award that recognized the use of best practices in structuring a long-term outsourcing relationship.

The City and Unisys renewed their contract in 2007 to add services, reduce costs and to strengthen the partnership through improved governance. Unisys now provides Minneapolis with a complete IT outsourcing portfolio of services including: program management, service desk, end user services, network management, enterprise (data center) services, disaster recovery, management of 911 infrastructures, and management of the security camera network.

The City of Minneapolis and Unisys Corporation partnership has also transformed Minneapolis into a pioneer in leading wireless infrastructure. This infrastructure led to the installation of a safety camera system that has contributed to a 44 percent reduction in robberies and 17 percent decrease in car thefts. It has also allowed the City to avoid another $6 million in court costs.

The Outsourcing Excellence Awards is the Outsourcing Center’s annual awards program recognizing the best outsourcing relationships worldwide. Also known as the "Oscars of Outsourcing," the program evaluates all nominated outsourcing relationships and honors the most outstanding at a public awards ceremony in New York. Winners have a feature article in the Outsourcing Journal’s awards issue and are featured in Forbes magazine.
