Learn and earn with new health and wellness classes

New this year, earn 50 points toward your 2014 wellness program when you attend one hour-long health and wellness class offered by the City.

By choosing from the health and wellness classes, you’ll learn about an area that interests you and that can help improve your health while earning points for your Medica scorecard. When you earn 300 points for completing health actions by Aug. 31, 2014, you will get a discount on your 2015 health insurance premiums.

The in-person classes allow you to interact with the instructor and your peers. Classes are offered at various times and locations. Choose from these topics:

Wellness and you

Is your lifestyle hazardous to your health? Wellness is much more than avoiding disease. This program introduces the major components of wellness, including proper nutrition, regular exercise, a balanced lifestyle and stress management.

Healthy eating: getting started

This seminar offers a non-diet approach to making healthier food choices. Following this process will help you achieve a healthy body weight and arm you with tools to keep the pounds off.

Fitting fitness into your busy day

It’s estimated that 80 percent of the U.S. population fails to get enough exercise, and 60 percent of Americans are inactive. If you don’t get enough exercise, this seminar is for you. Even the busiest person can weave 30 minutes of physical activity into his or her day.

Stress management 101

This useful program helps participants identify the stressors in their lives and understand their impact. Learn to use positive coping mechanisms to reduce the negative effects of stress. Attendees have an opportunity to practice relaxation exercises.

Natural energy boosters

Look at strategies to increase your energy and perk up your life. Learn about healthy eating practices. Find out which snacks to reach for when you need a boost.

Your 50 points will automatically get entered into your Medica scorecard when you attend a class. (It could take up to six weeks for the points to appear in your scorecard.)

Supervisors: If it’s not possible for you or your employees to attend an hour-long class, please contact Benefits to request an option for a half-hour class at your worksite.

How to enroll

To enroll:

  1. Log into HRIS
  2. Click “Learning and Development” (left side of screen)
  3. Click “Search Catalog” and type the course title (Wellness and you,  Healthy eating: getting started, Fitting fitness into your busy day, Stress management 101 or Natural energy boosters)
  4. Click the course title then “View Details” to check for available seats
  5. Click “Enroll” then “Submit Enrollment”
