Volunteers needed to participate in Dec. 7 Holidazzle parade

Looking for a unique and fun volunteer opportunity? City employees and their families are invited to don a lighted costume and join in the Dec. 7 Holidazzle parade. That evening’s parade is designated as Public Safety Night, and the City of Minneapolis is one of the sponsors.

Although most of the parade participants will be folks from Minneapolis Police, Minneapolis Fire, Hennepin County Sheriff and Hennepin County Emergency Medical Services, additional volunteers are needed to ensure a full parade contingent.

The deadline to sign up is Friday, Nov 30. To sign up, send the first and last name of all volunteers to stephen.mccarty@minneapolismn.gov. (Be sure to indicate if the volunteer is an adult or child — be sure to indicate the age of each child. Children must be at least five years old to participate in the parade. If you have questions, call Sergeant Stephen McCarty at 612-673-3588.

On Friday, Dec. 7, parade participants will report to the Hyatt Regency Hotel, 1300 Nicollet Mall, between 4:45 and 5:45 p.m. to complete parade waiver forms. Volunteers under age 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian who must complete the waiver form. You will need a completed parade waiver form for each volunteer. After completing the waivers, volunteers will don costumes provided by Holidazzle. Costumes are designed to fit over winter jackets, and some require the wearer to carry a six-pound battery pack. Volunteers are also asked to bring non-perishable food items to the Hyatt. All donations will go to the Emergency Foodshelf Network.

The parade begins at 6:30 p.m. and lasts about 30 minutes. The parade travels northbound on Nicollet Mall from 12th Street to 4th Street.  At the end of the parade, buses return volunteers to the Hyatt.

The Holidazzle parade features illuminated floats, music, celebrity Grand Marshals, and Santa in his sleigh. The Holidazzle parade began in 1992 and is an annual Downtown Minneapolis tradition. The 2012 Target Holidazzle runs Thursday through Sunday nights at 6:30 p.m. from Nov. 23 – Dec. 23.
