459 lbs. of fresh produce collected for food shelves
Thanks to donations from employees and area organizations, 459 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables were donated to two local food shelves between mid-August and early October. The donated produce from home gardens and farmers markets made it possible for the food shelves to offer better nutritional options to the people who rely on food shelves for their basic food needs.
The Department of Health and Family Support organized nine weekly collections at the Public Service Center and had the produce delivered to the food shelves operated by Catholic Charities and Operation Living Hope.
Based on this year’s success, the Health Department plans to run the drive next year.
This fresh produce donation project is part of the department’s Healthy Food Shelf project, which is supported by the Minneapolis Department of Health and Family Support’s Statewide Health Improvement Program (SHIP) grant, funded by the Minnesota Department of Health.
