PrepareFair showcases Downtown disaster preparedness

Some unusual vehicles and equipment were on display on Nicollet Mall Sept. 24 during the third annual PrepareFair. The event showcases the services and tools that can be called upon in the event of severe weather, a disease outbreak, act of terrorism, chemical spill or other emergency. Although these events can seem unlikely, Minneapolis need only look back to the 2009 tornado or the 2007 bridge collapse for reminders on the need for downtown emergency preparedness.

Sponsored by the Downtown Emergency Advisory Committee of the Minneapolis Downtown Improvement District, the PrepareFair highlights the Downtown’s emergency preparedness efforts and connects residents, businesses and employees to emergency preparedness resources.

The 2012 PrepareFair featured emergency preparedness exhibits at the IDS Crystal Court, emergency response vehicles from the Minneapolis Police Department, Minneapolis Fire Department and the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office along Nicollet Mall and demonstrations from special teams such as the Minneapolis Police Department Bomb Squad, SWAT and K9 units.

This year’s PrepareFair was scheduled to coincide with the International Downtown Association annual convention, taking place in Minneapolis. IDA attendees are representatives from cities across North America, and their involvement will highlight the work the Minneapolis community is doing to ensure emergency preparedness.
