2012 Nice Ride bike-sharing season begins in April

Thanks to our unusually mild winter, those green Nice Ride bikes will be returning to Minneapolis streets earlier than past years. Crews are currently returning Nice Ride bike-sharing kiosks to Downtown and neighborhood commercial areas. Once the kiosks are in place, the process of placing bikes at the kiosks will begin during the week of April 2. After Nice Ride staff have run a few system tests, folks can once again check out bikes.

Nice Ride Minnesota is a bike-sharing system that provides easy-to-ride, three-speed bikes at self-service kiosks. By June, Nice Ride plans to have 116 kiosks placed in the community; later in the biking season, they anticipate bringing that total up to 130 stations.

In past years, the City of Minneapolis has offered employees a certificate for substantial discounts on annual subscription fees. Details regarding the 2012 discount are still being worked out. Watch this newsletter and CityTalk for details when they become available.

With an annual subscription, you can take as many Nice Ride bike trips as you want from early April to November. (Bikes are stored over the winter.) Annual subscribers get a key they insert into the Nice Ride kiosk. With a key, subscribers don’t have to use the pay station, swipe a credit card or pay a security deposit.

If you’re a past subscriber, be sure to hang on to your Nice Ride key. If your subscription began in May of last year, your key will remain active until May of this year. When you renew your subscription, you'll keep the same key. To renew your subscription, log in to your account.

Because Nice Ride is designed to encourage short trips, there is no charge for the first 30 minutes of every ride. If you keep the bike longer than 30 minutes, a trip fee is charged. To avoid trip fees, ride your bike to a station near your destination and check the bike into the bike kiosk. When you’re ready to return, check out another bike. That way, you’re restarting the clock for your return trip.

This is Nice Ride’s third season in Minnesota. This year, Nice Ride will be expanding to downtown Saint Paul and new locations along the river in downtown Minneapolis. For more information about Nice Ride, visit its website or call customer service at 1-866-551-6423.
