Free sand available for residential sidewalks

Already shovel your sidewalks, but they’re still slippery? With the spell of subzero temperatures, bonded ice and packed snow can be difficult to remove from sidewalks.

The City of Minneapolis has several sites where Minneapolis residents can pick up free sand to sprinkle on icy residential sidewalks. After shoveling and clearing your sidewalks, if you can’t get down to the pavement, spreading sand can help improve traction until the weather warms up and you can remove the ice.

This service is available to Minneapolis residents only, not commercial or other properties. Quantities are limited to up to about a 5-gallon bucket full, and residents need to bring their own bucket.

The sand is meant as a stopgap to improve sidewalk conditions until the ice can be cleared.
