City’s new chief resilience officer begins work

Former State Legislator Kate Knuth will lead citywide efforts to address racial equity, aging infrastructure, climate change and other stresses

Former State lawmaker Kate Knuth has become the City’s chief resilience officer (CRO), a new position created to lead city-wide resilience-building efforts as part of Minneapolis’ new partnership with 100 Resilient Cities – Pioneered by The Rockefeller Foundation. As the City’s CRO, Knuth will oversee resilience strategy development and implementation to help Minneapolis prepare for, withstand and bounce back from current and future challenges, including aging infrastructure, natural disasters, racial inequities weather events and climate change.

Knuth

Knuth’s appointment is an essential element of Minneapolis’ resilience building partnership with 100 Resilient Cities. Minneapolis was named part of the 100RC network in May 2016, along with cities like London, New York, Bangkok, Chicago, Los Angeles and Seattle—and was selected from more than 1,000 applicants from around the world. The Rockefeller Foundation commits $164 million to 100RC and its worldwide effort to help cities address threats proactively.

The CRO is an innovative feature of 100RC’s resilience-building program, a role specifically designed to coordinate existing initiatives and plans both inside and outside of local government, foster new partnerships, alliances and programs, and structure financing mechanisms that will address challenges that will face Minneapolis residents. The program places a particular focus on low-income and vulnerable populations.

As one of the fastest-growing cities in the Midwest, Minneapolis’s resilience initiatives will focus on the city addressing the issues of aging infrastructure, climate change and racial inequities. Knuth will receive personnel and technical support provided by 100RC, and utilize resilience-building tools and resources  from private, public, academic and NGO sector organizations that have partnered with 100RC. Minneapolis’ Resilience Strategy will be a holistic, action-oriented blueprint to implement actions that will have meaningful impacts for the city’s future.
