Join a bicycle convoy tomorrow for Bike to Work Day

Enjoy one of the best biking cities in the country

Join Minneapolis elected officials leading bike rides from across the city on Friday morning to the Hennepin County Government Center for a large celebration of Twin Cities Bike to Work Day. Throughout the morning, Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition volunteers will staff commuter “pit stops” around Minneapolis offering snacks, giveaways and fun activities for all bicycle commuters. The City of Minneapolis helps those who live and work in the city use bicycles as a safe, healthy and low-cost way to travel. Making it safer and easier to get around our city by bicycle reduces wear and tear on our roadways, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, supports local businesses and supports community health.

More people are choosing to ride and are safer when they do. On an average day, more than 11,000 Minneapolis residents get to work by bicycle, which has tripled since the year 2000. During this same period of this rapid increase in bicycling, the number of bicycle crashes and bicyclists’ severe injuries has decreased.

As of 2016, Minneapolis has 135 miles of on-street bikeways and 100 miles of off-street bikeways. Since 2013, the City has installed more than 9 miles of protected bike lanes, including on Plymouth Avenue North, Third Avenue South, 11th Avenue South, Oak Street Southeast, 26th and 28th streets, and Blaisdell Avenue South. Protected bike lanes are designed to extend the comfort and experience of the city’s trail system to more areas of Minneapolis.
