City Council President Johnson appointed to Public Employees Retirement Association board

Gov. Mark Dayton has appointed Minneapolis City Council President Barbara Johnson to the Public Employees Retirement Association (PERA) board, which administers retirement plans for more than 250,000 current and former public employees throughout Minnesota.

Johnson, who will represent Minnesota cities, is one of two new members appointed to the PERA board. Her term is effective Jan. 23, 2017 and runs until Jan. 4, 2021.

In a letter to Dayton, Johnson wrote about her motivation to serve on the board. “The stability of the public pension system is extremely important to me. As a young woman, the eldest in my family, I lost my father, a Minneapolis Fire Fighter, to an early death. My mother, who had seven children, was able to stay home and provide for us because my father had a public pension.”

Johnson previously served on the Municipal Employees Retirement Fund before its merger with PERA. She was instrumental in crafting the merger of the City’s fire and police pensions into PERA along with Mayor Betsy Hodges and Council Vice President Elizabeth Glidden.

PERA was established in 1931 and provides monthly benefits to more than 100,000 retirees and other benefit recipients.
