City leaders unveil new Third Avenue protected bike lanes
City leaders and biking advocates celebrated the arrival of new protected bike lanes on Third Avenue today by testing them out on their bikes with a quick trip to the Minneapolis Convention Center.
The bollard-lined bike lanes, which separate cyclists from traffic, provide an important new north-south connection for cyclists through downtown. The new bike lanes stretch from First Street South to 16th Street East.
The City Council voted in April to approve a four-lane redesign plan for Third Avenue with the new protected bike lanes.
Once complete in 2017, Third Avenue will also feature newly striped bike lanes with more protective posts, additional trees and plantings along the corridor.
The City is collaborating with MnDOT to extend the Third Avenue bike lanes over the Mississippi River to University Avenue in 2017.
