Hodges declared unofficial winner of the Minneapolis mayoral race

Tabulation of the Minneapolis mayor’s race results was completed at about 10:15 p.m. Thursday, and Betsy Hodges has been declared the unofficial winner. Note that results become official when they are certified by the Minneapolis City Council, which serves as the Canvassing Board. All results are tentatively expected to be certified on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 9 a.m.

The final result came after 33 rounds of counting ballots in a race that began with 35 candidates. Under ranked-choice voting, in each round of counting, the candidate with the lowest number of votes is eliminated, and his or her votes are reallocated based on the next remaining ranking on those ballots. This process continues through a series of rounds until one candidate reaches the threshold of required votes, and that candidate is declared the winner.

Starting Friday, results will be tabulated in other races where there was no election night winner. Races are being tabulated one at a time, in the order in which the offices are listed on the ballot. A random order was drawn to handle City Council wards and Park and Recreation Board districts.
