Civil Rights staff reach out at community events this August

The Minneapolis Department of Civil Rights has a busy August planned for community outreach events. These events are aimed at connecting with residents and helping them learn about resources provided by the department.

These events include Second Chance Saturdays, Day of Dignity, and Urban League Family Day.

Second Chance Saturdays, Aug. 17:

For the third time this summer, the Department of Civil Rights will be participating in Second Chance Saturdays, a workshop and resource day hosted by the Council on Crime and Justice and the Criminal Justice League. This workshop event will help people learn how to expunge their criminal history and empower the attendees to advocate for their employment rights. Civil Rights Department staff will be present to give attendees the opportunity to file civil rights and police misconduct complaints with the City, and to provide attendees with employment, small business, and workforce training resources.

The event will take place at the University of Minnesota’s UROC building at 2001 Plymouth Ave. N. on Aug. 17, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. This event marks an important partnership with the Council on Crime and Justice to serve the needs of Minneapolis residents.

Day of Dignity, Aug. 24:

This year the Department of Civil Rights will participate in the Day of Dignity celebration at the Masjid An-Nur Mosque in north Minneapolis. This event works to provide community resources to ease the strain on families in need. This is a free event that is open to the public and is presented by Al-Muu’uun Community Outreach and Islamic Relief USA.

The Department will be on hand for attendees to pick up information, file claims of discrimination or police misconduct, and learn about the employment training resources available. The event will take place at Masjid An-Nur Mosque located at 1729 Lyndale Ave. N. on Aug. 24, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Urban League Family Day, Aug. 31:

The Minneapolis Department of Civil Rights will participate again this year in the Urban League Family Day. This celebration highlights the importance of strong families and communities among African-Americans. The Department of Civil Rights will be on hand to build awareness of our work and provide information about defending your rights and getting involved in the department. This event is always a wonderful family event full of activities for children, food, and information about community resources.

The event will take place between Logan and Penn avenues on Plymouth Avenue North in north Minneapolis. The department will be participating in Urban League Family Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31.
