Police and Fire departments square off in BBQ "Battle of the Badges" Aug. 17

Whose barbeque cuisine will reign supreme? Find out Saturday, Aug. 17 when the Minneapolis Police Department and Minneapolis Fire Department square off in a BBQ "Battle of the Badges" and community gathering at North Commons Park from noon - 4 p.m.

The event, with the goal of bringing the community together, will feature one team of officers from the MPD and one team of firefighters from the MFD who will cook up their best ribs for a large judging panel to include: community residents, Police Chief Harteau, Fire Chief Fruetel and local celebrities.

Also featured will be activities for kids, games for adults, dances and musical performances by some of the brightest stars in the Twin Cities and nationally. Featuring: Paris Bennett, Javonta Patterson & DFY, Margeaux Davis, Brandon Trevon & We Are Hip Hop Group, James Grear & Co., Jamecia Bennett and the award winning Sounds of Blackness.

As the competitors fire up the grills and smokers, the Minnesota BBQ Society will cook up pulled pork sandwiches and beef hot dogs, which are being donated by hometown grocer CUB Foods in partnership with Hormel Foods and Ball Park Brand. Snapple, TEN, Avenue Eatery, The Cookie Cart, Dairy Queen and Haagen Daz ice cream will be there to pass out samples.

The Minneapolis Fire Department will bring their Fire Safety House along with life safety equipment and demonstrations, and the Minneapolis Police Department’s Canine, Bomb Squad and Mounted Patrol units and the Police Activities League will be in the park. Representatives from Housing Inspections, Problem Properties, Animal Care and Control and Traffic Control will be on hand to answer questions and distribute information. Minneapolis Solid Waste and Recycling will have the One Sort recycling display along with fun activities for kids.

This event is free and open to the public.
