City awarded grant to improve Downtown transportation

The City of Minneapolis has been awarded a Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) grant that will improve mobility and access into downtown Minneapolis.

MnDOT awarded the City a $6.79 million Transportation Economic Development grant to construct a new westbound Interstate 94 off ramp that will reorient traffic entering downtown Minneapolis to connect with 7th Street South instead of 5th Street South.

This project is an integral part of the larger plan to improve downtown transportation networks as envisioned in the City of Minneapolis’ Access Minneapolis Downtown Action Plan (2007).

As part of this project, the South Fifth Street exit ramp will be closed and its bridge repurposed.

Construction on the 7th Street South ramp is scheduled to begin in 2015.
