American Red Cross opens safe, cool shelter to those still affected by storms

UPDATE: The shelter is now closed. If you need assistance visit or call (612) 871-7676.

Due to the thousands of households still without power from last week's storms, the American Red Cross has opened a shelter at Armstrong Senior High School in Plymouth (10635 36th Ave N). The shelter phone number is 612-875-3896.

This shelter will provide a safe, cool place for those affected by storms to rest, get some sleep, and charge devices - including nebulizers and other rechargeable batteries for medical devices.

The American Red Cross has been responding since the storms first hit, helping families who suffered trees falling on their homes, fires from storm-affected A/C units, and other damage. This week there has been an uptick in the number of people requesting help from the Red Cross as they have exhausted their immediate resources and are still without power and/or in need of assistance. The shelter will be available until power is restored and/or immediate assistance is no longer needed.

Folks can help people affected by disasters, like those impacted by storms, as well as countless crises at home and around the world, by making a donation to support American Red Cross Disaster Relief. Your gift enables the Red Cross to prepare for and provide shelter, food, emotional support and other assistance in response to disasters. Visit or call 1-800-RED-CROSS. Contributions may also be sent to your local American Red Cross chapter or to the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, DC 20013.
