Public voting open for Convention Center Plaza art competition
Public voting has begun in the new art competition to transform the Minneapolis Convention Center Plaza.
The "Creative City Challenge" sought proposals last month from Minnesota-resident architects, landscape architects, urban designers, planners, engineers, scientists, artists, students and individuals of all backgrounds to create and install a temporary, interactive, site-specific, eco-focused portal to the City of Minneapolis on the Minneapolis Convention Center Plaza next summer. The Plaza is a green roof that is located directly across from the Minneapolis Convention Center on Second Ave. S. The installation will be unveiled in the summer of 2013 by the Minneapolis Convention Center, Meet Minneapolis, Convention & Visitors Association and the City of Minneapolis.
Voting is open to all, but voters must be on Facebook and "like" the Minneapolis Convention Center Facebook page to be able to vote. The voting window is open until Jan. 7, 2013, at the Art in the Plaza Facebook page. The top 5 vote getters will be asked to develop a full-blown proposal for the project, which will be juried on Feb. 27, 2013, when there will be a public presentation at the University of Minnesota.
There are 16 entries, ranging from issues of recycling to water to architectural “follies” to a giant plaza xylophone.
The winning entry will be selected and installed on the Minneapolis Convention Center Plaza beginning June 7, 2013, for the duration of the summer. Additional information is online at www.minneapolis.org/art-in-the-plaza.
