Upcoming large events spark road and block closures

Several larger-scale events in the coming weeks will spark road or block closures and increased law enforcement in the City of Minneapolis. City leaders are urging residents and visitors to be aware of changing routes and to consider alternative transportation options to optimize travel around the City of Lakes.  

Weekend of June 27-29

  • Twin Cities Pride is hosting various events around the City, and Metro Transit is offering free ride passes. Visit the Pride website to download the passes or check out the event’s bike check to ride two wheels downtown. The parade and Rainbow Run struts downtown on Sunday, June 29. Starting at 7 a.m.: 
    • Hennepin Avenue will be closed with no cross traffic from Washington Avenue to 16th Street North 
    • Third Street will be closed from Portland Avenue South to 1st Avenue North with cross streets open 
    • Spruce Street to Yale Place will also be closed, as the parade goes into Loring Park 
    • 2nd Avenue South from Washington Avenue to 5th Street 
    • Portions of the left lane on Nicollet Avenue will remain open for street sweeping and hotel access.  
  • Southbound Hennepin Avenue will be closed from Laurel Avenue West to Lyndale Avenue South, as well as 16th Street North from Hennepin Avenue to Laurel Avenue West on Saturday, June 28, from 8 am to 1 pm.  
  • A note on traveling in from different parts of the metro:  
    • The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MNDOT) will close I-494 in both directions from Friday evening until Monday morning between Highway 100 and Highway 77, and between the I-35W and I-494 interchange and Highway 62.  
    • MNDOT construction will also begin with an eastbound closure of I-94 from Highway 280 to I-35E from Friday evening until Monday morning. 

Holiday weekend of July 4-6 

  • The Minneapolis Convention Center is “serving” the USA Volleyball Junior National Championship July 3-6.  
  • The Minnesota Lynx host a three-game home stretch at Target Center when they host the Washington Mystics on July 3, the Golden State Valkyries on July 5, and the Chicago Sky on July 6. 
  • The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board hosts “Red, White & BOOM!” on the City’s Riverfront on July 4. The fireworks show starts at 10 p.m.  
    • Roadways around the river will be closed for festivities, including Main Street, West River Parkway and the 3rd Avenue bridge.   
    • There will also be limited access on 2nd Street South and one lane on Hennepin Avenue crossing the river.  
    • The Stone Arch Bridge will be closed to pedestrians and bicycles. 
  • Target Field will be host to a three-game series between the Minnesota Twins and Tampa Bay Rays July 4-6.  
  • Come hungry for the Taste of Minnesota July 5, and 6 in downtown Minneapolis. Located along Washington Avenue and Nicollet Mall, the event promises a feast of food, culture and music for the whole family. 
    • Road closures include 3rd Street South from 2nd Avenue South to Hennepin Avenue, and Marquette Avenue South from 4th Street to 2nd Street South
