Our Agenda: A City of Opportunity

Minneapolis is on the right track and moving forward because of our commitment to reform and getting results for people. We must make sure that our families and neighborhoods are protected, that jobs and opportunity are available to each and every person, that our next generation is set on the path to success, and that we continue building the strongest economy of any city in America. This is our agenda for accomplishing those goals:

A Safe Place to Call Home

We will not rest until Minneapolis is a safe place to call home. Although crime is down significantly, we still have much more work to do. We will be tough on criminals when we need to, but we will also build partnerships between police and residents and focus on prevention programs, especially for young people, that make our neighborhoods safer. In these tough economic times, we will seek every resource and demand the highest efficiency and accountability from our police department to keep a strong police presence on the street and behind the scenes. We will continue to invest in the technology and tools our police need to be effective. We will remember that public safety is about more than police by investing in tough prosecution and in the aggressive enforcement of commercial and residential property standards in every neighborhood.

Create Jobs and Grow Businesses

In these tough economic times, we will work harder than ever to ensure that Minneapolis continues to be a place where innovative businesses want to and can grow. We will make it known that Minneapolis is “open for business” and will do what it takes to put people to work and make businesses succeed. We will continue to implement a focused and pro-active business growth strategy that builds on our strengths and core industries such as the health and life science sector, where businesses like Allina in south Minneapolis and Coloplast in north Minneapolis can move here and flourish. We will help small businesses grow along neighborhood commercial corridors with unique and specialized financing. We will focus on developing local industries and jobs for the new green economy. And we will keep up the fight against foreclosures while at the same time provide affordable, stable housing for everyone.

A City of Great Places and Spaces

Minneapolis is growing again. We should celebrate this feat, but remember that we are not just here to grow the city but to weave it together, to restore the fabric that differentiates a great city from just another housing development or office park or shopping center. The New Minneapolis will not be about just housing, or jobs or transportation in isolation, but will be an integrated collection of strong neighborhoods with quality jobs and stores within walking distance of our homes. Where transit supports our commercial corridors and the economy grows because we are stewards of the greatest natural environment of any city in America. The most important part of this work will be implementing Access Minneapolis, our transportation vision that is helping to build light rail lines connecting Minneapolis to the University of MN, St. Paul and the suburbs. We will continue the work that has made Minneapolis the best biking and walking city in America by adding and improving bike lanes. We will also continue leading the nation among cities truly committed to fighting climate change and preserving our environment.

A place where the Next Generation of Youth Thrive

Minneapolis’ next generation needs us now. Too many lack hope, purpose, and strong families. We need to give our youth the direction and resources they need to succeed. As Minnesota struggles to compete in an increasingly global economy, this state’s single greatest asset is the youth of the next generation of Minneapolis, who speak more than 100 languages, come from all over the world, and spend every day crossing cultural boundaries. By giving our youth the skills to compete we are creating the workforce of tomorrow and helping to keep our region strong. We must continue improving our schools by fighting for even stronger reform and even better results, but our teachers and students also need our support outside the classroom. That means more focus on early childhood development, out of school activities, and the Minneapolis Promise: our groundbreaking initiative that supports career counseling in every school, gives thousands of youth summer jobs and provides free college access to any Minneapolis high school graduate.

Run Government Well

At the heart of our ambitious agenda lies the most basic of principals: That local government is first and foremost about those basic core services that touch and transform peoples lives every day. Public safety, civic engagement and other core services will come first and we will deliver them with efficiency and in deep partnership with our citizens. We believe in government, and we will run this government well, but we need to run it for a reason. This government will deliver a good value to our citizens, and we will do that by being a government with values. Efforts like Minneapolis 311 will continue to remove barriers for residents to access city services; Results Minneapolis will continue to track progress on our work; and Wireless Minneapolis will show we aren’t afraid to innovate.
