About the City Council

The Council is the legislative branch of the City of Minneapolis.  Its thirteen members—each elected from separate wards—work collectively, and in partnership with the Mayor, to enact local laws and public policies that strengthen and preserve the health, safety, and welfare of the community.

As an extension of representational duties, each Council Member serves on a number of outside organizations, associations, and groups. These additional duties enable the City Council to participate in metropolitan, regional, statewide, and national matters that impact Minneapolis and the quality of life for its residents. For details on these assignments, see Council Member Assignments (pdf)

City Vision and Goals

On March 28, 2014, the Mayor and City Council adopted the City’s vision, values, goals and strategic directions that will guide the City’s work for the next four years.
