Minneapolis Commission on Civil Rights (MCCR) Vacancy

The Civil Rights Commission was created for the purpose of carrying forward policies of the city to promote civil rights. The ordinance states this shall be done by seeking to prevent and eliminate discrimination; conduct public meetings and forums; conduct programs of research and study; and advise the City’s elected officials and departments of matters relating to the commission.  

Deadline:  For receiving applications will be Friday, October 5, 2018.


There are total of Eleven (11) vacancies and four (4) are attorney vacancies.  *We are only seeking active licensed attorneys for the attorney openings.


*Non-active licensed attorneys may apply; however, if selected you will not be categorized as an attorney commissioner.

Selection Process

When the appointment cycle is open, applications are received by the City Clerk's Office. A Selection Committee comprised of representatives from the offices of the Mayor, City Council, and Civil Rights Department will review applications and interview applicants if necessary. Selected applicants will be forwarded to the full City Council for approval.

Additional Information

The Commission meets on the third Monday of every month at 6:00 p.m. In Minneapolis City Hall Room 241, unless otherwise specified on the Commission Calendar.

The Commission is comprised of 21 Minneapolis residents. Commissioners have two main functions:

First, The Commission's advocacy function as a Commissioner is to act as a liaison between the public and the Department of Civil Rights. In this capacity, Commissioners are encouraged to educate the community about their civil rights and advocate on behalf of their communities to the Department of Civil Rights regarding current civil rights concerns.

Second, the adjudicative function as a Commissioner is to serve on a review committee or a hearing committee. A review committee decides appeals of determinations issued by the director through the Complaint Investigations Division (Division). Review committees consist of three (3) Commissioners, two (2) of which must be active licensed attorneys. A hearing committee is the trier of fact over cases that have not come to conclusion via the conciliation process. A hearing committee consists of three (3) active licensed attorneys, whom can be members or non-members of the commission.
