In coordination with a 2017 resurfacing project, the Minneapolis Public Works Department plans to install an east-west bikeway connection through the East Harriet and Kingfield neighborhoods. While a continuous route on 42nd Street West is identified on the Minneapolis Bicycle Master Plan, Public Works has evaluated the corridor and is proposing an alignment that uses segments of 42nd Street West and 43rd Street West. This alignment provides direct access to Lake Harriet and controlled crossings of busy streets.
Proposed Street Design
Most of 42nd/43rd Street West is already a low-volume, low speed street. To formalize a bicycle connection between Lake Harriet Parkway and neighborhoods to the east, a bicycle boulevard is the recommended bikeway design on 42nd/43rd Street West. Pavement markings and wayfinding signs will be included to help users navigate the route. No on-street parking changes are proposed with this project.
A bikeway on 42nd/43rd Street West would connect to several existing and planned bikeways including:
- Lake Harriet Parkway (existing)
- Bryant Avenue South (existing)
- Pleasant Avenue South (planned)
- Nicollet Avenue South (existing)
- 42nd Street East, east of Nicollet Avenue South (planned)
