Project Details
This project seeks to provide bicycle accommodation on Sheridan and Upton Avenues South in the Linden Hills and Fulton Neighborhoods. Bike lanes are planned for the section of Upton Avenue from 44th Street W to the V-intersection just north of 43rd Street W between Upton and Sheridan Avenues. Shared lane markings (also known as sharrows) are planned on Sheridan Avenue from the V-intersection with Upton north to 39th Street W. Shared lane markings are also planned on Upton Avenue from 44th Street W south to 50th Street W.
Shared lane markings are necessary due to width constraints on both Upton and Sheridan. The section of Upton between 44th Street and the V-intersection north of 43rd Street is wide enough to accommodate bike lanes with all existing parking and travel lanes.
What is a bike lane?
A bike lane is a dedicated travel space for bikes on the road. It is designated by white lines separating the bike lane from the motor vehicle travel lane and from the parking lane. Bike lanes are also marked with bike lane symbols. Learn more about bike lanes
Why is a sharrow (shared lane marking)?
Shared lane markings or “sharrows” (derived from “Shared” and “Arrows”) are pavement markings used to mark a designated bike route. Placed in the travel lane, they encourage bicyclists to ride in a safe position outside of the door zone (where driver’s side doors of parked cars open). Learn more about sharrows
Next Steps
Public Works is seeking council member approval for this project. Bike lanes will be painted following the Upton/Sheridan resurfacing in October 2012. Bike lane symbols and sharrows will not be installed until spring of 2013.
