Project Details
Bicycle boulevards are proposed on 17th Avenue S (between 24th Street and Minnehaha Parkway) and 12th Avenue S (between Minnehaha Parkway and 60th Street). Bicycle boulevards improve local, residential streets for bicycling, including features such as traffic calming, safer crossings at busy streets, large bicycle pavement markings, and way finding signs. Bicyclists and motorists share the same lanes. A bicycle boulevard does not use bike lanes, and it does not remove on-street parking.
Information about Miniature Traffic Circles
Current traffic calming and stop sign changes under consideration include:
- 17th Ave at 26th St: Curb extension on SE corner facing 26th St
- 17th Ave at 28th St: Curb extension on NW corner facing 28th St
- 17th Ave at 32nd St: Miniature traffic circle, Remove stop signs for 4-way yield
- 17th Ave at 33rd St: Switch stop signs from north-south to east-west
- 17th Ave at 34th St: Miniature traffic circle, Remove stop signs for 4-way yield
- 17th Ave at 36th St: Miniature traffic circle, Remove stop signs for 4-way yield
- 17th Ave at 42nd St: Median (pdf) with bicycle and pedestrian cut-thru, Motorist left turn prohibited
- 18th Ave b/t 41st St and 43rd St: Speed bumps
- 17th Ave at 45th St: Mini traffic circle, Remove stop signs for 4-way yield
- 17th Ave at 46th St: Median with no turning restrictions
- 17th Ave at Minnehaha Pkwy: Curb cut and path connection to Minnehaha Creek bike path
- 12th Ave at 53rd St: Speed bumps and pedestrian crosswalks, switch stop signs from north-south to east-west
Lane changes are proposed on 60th Street E and Bloomington Avenue S. Shared lanes are proposed on both sides of 60th Street between 12th Avenue and Bloomington Avenue. A bike lane is proposed on Bloomington Avenue S between 60th and 62nd Streets on the east side of the street and a shared lane is proposed on the west side of the street.
Parking changes are proposed on Bloomington Avenue between 61st and 62nd Streets. Parking would be removed on the east side of the street.
Bike racks will be installed along the project corridor.

A test median has been placed at the intersection of 17th Avenue and 42nd Street. The purpose of the test is to gain experience with a proposed permanent median (pdf), which would be installed at a later date.
A median is expected to have the benefit of slowing traffic traveling along 42nd Street. A median would also provide a stopping space for bicycles and pedestrians crossing 42nd Street at 17th Avenue. Impacts from the median would include minimal parking loss on 42nd Street and prohibiting left turns from 42nd Street onto 17th Avenue, and from 17th Avenue onto 42nd Street. North-south traffic would also be prohibited on 17th Avenue across 42nd Street.
Temporary signing and barriers will be placed as part of the test, guiding motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians through the intersection according to the parameters above. Comments are welcome through 311 or through our online form. Signs inviting comment will be posted at the median.

A median is proposed at 17th Avenue and 42nd Street. To discourage traffic from diverting onto the 42xx block of 18th Avenue, speed humps are proposed in this block.
A community meeting will be held on October 5th at 6:30pm at Bethel Lutheran Church (4120 17th Avenue S). If you can’t make the meeting share your comments with Council Member Elizabeth Glidden, elizabeth.glidden@minneapolismn.gov or (612) 673-2208; or Shaun Murphy, Non Motorized Transportation Coordinator, City of Mpls, shaun.murphy@minneapolismn.gov or (612) 333-2450.

Public Works reassessed the budget and determined that additional funding would allow all project elements to be constructed. Under the previous budget, only a minimum of project elements could be built. A funding request was submitted to Bike Walk Twin Cities this past spring. Partial additional funding was granted in July. The City of Minneapolis is now working with Bike Walk Twin Cities to determine which elements can be constructed with the available funds. Construction is now anticipated in 2012.

In early summer, Public Works staff met with neighborhood organizations and city council members to collect feedback on the draft plans.
Public Works is now collecting feedback on draft plans (pdf) for the corridor from the public at-large. Please provide feedback on which features and intersections should be priorities for this project. Not all features will be constructed. Cost estimates (pdf) for each feature and traffic calming examples (pdf) may help you identify priorities. Detailed layouts (pdf) will be presented at public meetings in August.
