Project Details

Penn Avenue South is in the process of undergoing full reconstruction in 2013 and 2014. Because Penn Avenue was included on the City of Minneapolis Bicycle Master Plan, several bicycle accommodation options were considered. However, due to right of way constraints, a bikeway was not included in the final design for Penn Avenue South.

The absence of a bikeway on Penn Avenue is being mitigated by separate capital funding set aside in the 2013 budget. The intent of this funding is to create an alternative north-south alignment in the vicinity of Penn Avenue. Public Works is investigating the feasibility of adding a bicycle boulevard on quiet side streets near Penn Avenue.

What is a bicycle boulevard?

A bicycle boulevard is a lower-volume, lower-speed street that has been optimized for bicycle traffic. The purpose of a bicycle boulevard is to provide bicyclists - especially those who are not comfortable riding on busy streets - a safe and more relaxing place to ride. While many residential streets are already favorable to most bicyclists, a bicycle boulevard goes the extra step to provide safe crossings at major streets and encourage motorists to travel at slow speeds, while reducing the frequency of stop signs. Next Steps

Public Works will hold a public meeting for two possible bike boulevard alignments on October 10, 2013 at the Armatage Park Community Center (2500 W. 57th Street). The meeting will begin at 6:30PM.

Subsequent to the meeting, Public Works will work Council Member Betsy Hodges and the Ward 13 Council Office to confirm the preferred alignment. Public Works will create a project plan for the preferred alignment and seek City Council authorization to proceed.

Construction is anticipated in spring/summer 2014.
