Pull out your bikes and sneakers Twin Cities 2007 Bike/Walk to Work Day is Friday, May 18th! This day is an opportunity for commuters, who normally drive or take transit, to bike or walk to work. It is also a day for cyclists and pedestrians to socialize and band together on their commutes. As in years past, a grand celebration will take place on the north plaza of the Hennepin County Government Center (300 S 6th Street), in downtown Minneapolis from 6:30 to 8:30 am. You will be greeted by a band, receive a free breakfast, and have the opportunity to listen to encouraging words from your elected officials.
20 organized bike rides and 8 organized walks are converging upon the HCGC plaza. Each route is led by a dedicated and experienced cyclist or pedestrian. Organized routes are a great way for new bike and walk commuters to learn a safe route to downtown. Newcomers can also ask detailed questions about bike and walk commuting. Meanwhile, experienced bike/walk commuters will have the opportunity to socialize with their biking and walking neighbors. Safety in numbers will be the main attraction of the day.
Refer to the system map (pdf) to choose a ride or walk that works for you. Special biking highlights include 6 rides from surrounding communities (the longest bike ride departs from the Brooklyn Center Park & Ride at 73rd Avenue – 8.9 miles), 10 bike rides from South Minneapolis, 2 from North Minneapolis, 2 from Northeast Minneapolis (Mayor Rybak will join the Northeast Park route), and 1 from Southeast Minneapolis. Walking highlights include 3 walks from the inner neighborhoods surrounding downtown (Elliot Park, Loring Park, and North Loop), 3 from South Minneapolis (Council Member Lilligren will join the Whittier/Steven’s Square route), and 2 from North Minneapolis.
