Green Homes North is an initiative of the City of Minneapolis and several partners which will build 100 energy efficient homes over five years to revitalize neighborhoods in North Minneapolis. Launched in 2012, funding has been awarded to 15 developers to build 74 homes to date: 44 have sold, 11 are under construction, and 19 will begin construction this spring.
The green homes are constructed to the Minnesota Green Communities Standards as developed by the State of Minnesota or certified as LEED for Home with high efficiency mechanical systems, Energy Star appliances and lighting, and durable exterior construction.
Building new, green, energy efficient and sustainable housing on available City owned vacant lots will build area market value, add a boost to the Northside housing market, and increase confidence of current owners. These green homes offer an affordable housing alternative and will complement the older, classic homes in these neighborhoods. The Green Homes North program gives buyers another reason to discover the diverse neighborhoods of North.
Green materials may include: Energy Star appliances; LP SmartSide (an engineered, environmental friendly wood siding) exteriors; Energy Star windows or Andersen double or triple glazed windows; low VOC paints; green label carpets; low flow plumbing fixtures; dual flush toilets; WaterSense labeled products; continuously active ventilation systems; engineered heating and cooling systems; whole house air exchanger systems; compact fluorescent light bulbs; concrete that has a 40% fly ash content;, Insulated Concrete Form (ICF) foundations; 95% efficient power vented furnaces and power vented water heaters; programmable thermostats and water heaters. 65% of construction waste from job sites will be recycled. Properties will be finished with trees and landscaping with the additional objective of surface storm water management and water reuse.
