Demin Day is April 26, 2023

Demin Day helps people understand and learn about sexual violence. The event supports sexual violence awareness efforts happening around the world. The Department of Racial Equity, Inclusion & Belonging (REIB) will host a Denim Day awareness event in the city. We’ll work with the Sexual Violence Center of Minneapolis to host this event. 

Our Denim Day event will:

• Bring awareness to the sexual violence that still harms our society.
• Honor victims and survivors of sexual violence.
• Talk about the disproportionate rates of sexual violence that Black and Brown communities face.

We encourage you to wear denim for the event.

About the event

The Sexual Violence Center will offer information, education and resources about its free services.

Advocates help survivors of:

• Child sex abuse
• Human trafficking
• Sex trafficking

We encourage you to wear denim for the event. You can have your photo taken to show your denim and support of survivors.

Denim Day background

In 1999, the Italian Supreme Court overturned a 1992 rape conviction. Their reason was that the victim was wearing tight jeans. The court claimed she would have needed to help her attacker to remove them and this implied consent.

After the court’s decision, women in the Italian Parliament wore jeans in solidarity with the victim. An organization called Peace Over Violence created Denim Day. Denim Day shows support for survivors of sexual violence.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month

On April 13, the Minneapolis City Council issued a resolution. The resolution named April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month. It means to show that the City stands in solidarity with survivors of sexual violence.
