City of Minneapolis responds to IUOE Local 49's Intent to Strike Notice

December 17, 2021

Today, the International Union of Operating Engineers Local #49 (IUOE Local 49) issued an intent to strike notice to the City of Minneapolis. Following a 10-day cooling off period as required by State law, a legal strike may begin as early as 12:01 a.m. Dec. 28, 2021.

The City began negotiating with Local 49 in March 2021 and has continued to meet throughout this year. Two tentative agreements as well as the last, best and final offer were rejected. Local 49 represents approximately 100 Public Works employees. This group includes auto mechanics and heavy equipment operators. These employees also assist with snow removal and road treatments.

The City continues to bargain in good faith and work toward a fair and equitable contract for these employees and the residents and businesses of Minneapolis.

The City is working on contingency plans to ensure critical services for residents, businesses and visitors will continue. The City appreciates and recognizes that hard work these employees commit to each day.
