On April 24, 2021, the Minneapolis Police Department’s lead homicide team met with the family for 90 minutes. They were briefed on many aspects of the case. One of the detectives assigned to the case is fluent in the Spanish language. He was instrumental in the conversations with family in Minnesota and Mexico.

This case has been very fast moving and moved from a suspicious death to a homicide once evidence at the scene was able to be more closely examined.

A suspect was quickly identified, and information surfaced that he had fled the state. Investigators engaged the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office and obtained an “emergency” Arrest Warrant for the suspect. At that point, the Ohio State Highway Patrol was contacted and requested they locate and arrest the suspect. The troopers were able to take the suspect into custody. The vehicle he was traveling in has been secured by the Ohio police. He was in custody within 8 hours of being identified as a suspect.

Jose Daniel Cuenca-Zuniga, 23, is being held in custody in Ohio. Minnesota officials will work on obtaining a Governor’s Rendition Warrant to extradite him to Minneapolis to face charges.

The Medical Examiner will release the identity, along with the nature and cause of death, in the coming days.

The investigation into this case remains very active and additional information will be released as appropriate.
