Youth Violence – A Pubic Health Issue
In 2007, Council Member Gordon and I coauthored a resolution declaring Youth Violence a Public Health Issue. The resolution led to the creation of a task force to develop a plan to end the epidemic of Youth Violence using a Public Health approach. Under the chairmanship of the mayor, this high powered, cross-sector task force created a 32 point strategy that is being implemented. We presume that youth violence increases under certain conditions, that it is entirely predictable and categorically preventable. We simply must, as we would with any other epidemic, inoculate our young people and eradicate the environmental risk factors.
