TMC Upgrade/Controller Conversion
The City received federal funds from the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) program to upgrade the TMC and replace obsolete traffic signal controllers and cabinets. The project began in 2012 and was completed in 2013. The scope included a new Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) including a new video wall system, TACTICS Central Traffic Management Software, new workstations, and remodeled server room. The City’s existing copper communication network was enhanced by adding fiber trunk lines out to hub locations. 141 obsolete controllers and electro-mechanical signals were replaced in order to bring communication back to the TMC.
Beginning in fall 2015, the City has received another CMAQ grant to further enhance the TMC systems. The project will replace 262 obsolete controllers to establish a citywide standard level of signal controller features. Additional fiber communication segments will be added to connect to signals not currently connected to the TMC and install segments that will add redundancy to prevent large communication outages. More PTZ cameras and video detection systems will also be installed.
Citywide Signal Retiming
The City received federal funds from the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) program to retime the traffic signals in Minneapolis. The project collected vehicle turning movement, pedestrian, and bike counts for each signalized intersection. The City was divided up into three separate projects for the data analysis. Signals along Hiawatha Ave were previously adjusted in 2012 as part of a separate project. Implementation began summer 2013 and was complete by fall 2014. The results were analyzed which showed an extraordinary reduction in congestion and emissions. As traffic pattern change over time, City staff will continue to monitor the signal timing plans and make adjustments as needed.
