WARNING - Gas cylinders and tanks (other than fire extinguishers) contain a compressed gas. Even when the tank seems to be empty, there is still a small amount of explosive gas left in the cylinder.

Telephones

Cellular Phones:  If your wireless provider is AT&T, Sprint or Verizon, the telephone and battery can be taken to one of the retail stores for recycling. AT&T will accept all brands of cell phones.

The CALL TO PROTECT campaign collects wireless phones to benefit victims of domestic violence. Proceeds from the sale of phones help fund agencies that fight domestic violence and are also used to support the educational efforts of the Wireless Foundation. Other phones are refurbished and become lifelines for domestic violence victims when faced with an emergency situation.  Call (888) 901-SAFE (7233).

Transmission Fluid

Do NOT place in the garbage cart. This item NOT collected by Solid Waste & Recycling or accepted at the South Transfer Station. Disposal with garbage is prohibited.

By State law, a person cannot place brake fluid, motor oil, oil filters, power steering fluid, or transmission fluid in the garbage, or pour on the land, into water, down a sewer, or into a storm drain.

Some automotive service Stations accept automotive fluids and oil filters, usually for a fee.

Treated Wood

Do NOT place in the garbage cart. This item NOT collected by Solid Waste & Recycling or accepted at the South Transfer Station. Disposal with garbage is prohibited.

Lumber containing creosote (railroad ties) is hazardous and not accepted.

CCA-treated lumber is not accepted. Chromated copper arsenate (CCA) has been used extensively in this country as a wood preservative. CCA is composed of: copper, which acts as a fungicide; arsenate, a form of arsenic, which is an insecticide; and chromium, which binds the ingredients to the wood.

CCA-treated wood should never be burned or shredded for mulch.

Tree Bark

Small pieces can be included with grass clippings and leaves. Place in bags. Each bag must weigh less than 40 lbs. Do not use bags larger than 33 gallons.

State law prohibits disposing of yard waste with the garbage. South Transfer Station does not accept yard waste.

Yard waste collected mid-April through mid-November, weather permitting.

Tree Stumps

State law prohibits disposing of tree stumps with the garbage. South Transfer Station will NOT accept this item.

If you are willing to take this item to a commercial location, and pay a fee, call our customer service staff at (612) 673-2917 for locations.

 

 

Tree Waste

State law prohibits disposing of yard waste with the garbage. South Transfer Station does not accept yard waste.

As a Minneapolis resident with Solid Waste & Recycling services, place yard waste next to the garbage cart at the collection point. Yard waste is collected every garbage day. A special truck comes out to pick up your yard waste, during the yard waste season. Yard waste collected mid-April through mid-November, weather permitting.

Small pieces can be included with grass clippings and leaves. Place in bags. Each bag must weigh less than 40 lbs. Do not use bags larger than 33 gallons.

Brush and branches must be less than three (3) inches in diameter. Bundle securely with twine or rope, do NOT use wire or tape. Bundles must be less than three (3) feet in length and weigh less than forty (40) lbs.
