Carbon Monoxide Detectors | If the carbon monoxide detector contains a battery, remove the battery. Bag and place inside the garbage cart. Please remember to recycle the battery. Contact the manufacturer to check if there is a take back program. | ||
Carbon Paper | Bag and place inside the garbage cart. We do not accept this item in the recycling program or in the organics recycling program. See Paper Recycling for more information. | ||
Cardboard | Flatten cardboard boxes and place in cart. Do not stuff into cart so it won't come out easily when the cart is tipped. If you have cardboard that will not fit in your recycling cart, bundle it with string or twine. Bundles of cardboard must not weigh more than 40 pounds. See Paper Recycling for more information. | ||
Cards: Greeting & Holiday | Tear off the fronts of cards and reuse them as postcards or donate to a local organization that reuses greeting cards to make new ones. If unable to reuse or donate, place in recycling cart. See Paper Recycling for more information. | ||

CD-ROM | If reusable, erase the files and reuse the disk. Check the Yellow Pages under "Compact Discs, Tapes, Records - Retail", to check if a nearby store will buy or accept as donation. Hennepin County's HHW & Recycling Drop-Off Facilities will accept audio, video, and computer media for recycling. If unable to donate or deliver to Hennepin County's Facility, bag and place media inside your garbage cart. | ||
Cellular Phones | Do NOT place in the garbage cart. This item NOT collected by Solid Waste & Recycling or accepted at the South Transfer Station. Disposal with garbage is prohibited. Cellular phones contain hazardous components, and should not be placed in the garbage cart. Hennepin County's HHW & Recycling Drop-Off Facilities will accept for recycling. If your wireless provider is AT&T, Sprint, or Verizon, the phone and battery can be taken to one of their retail stores for recycling. AT&T will accept all brands of cell phones. The CALL TO PROTECT campaign collects wireless phones to benefit victims of domestic violence. Proceeds from the sale of phones help fund agencies that fight domestic violence and are also used to support the educational efforts of the Wireless Foundation. Other phones are refurbished and become lifelines for domestic violence victims when faced with an emergency situation. Call (888) 901-SAFE (7233). | ||

If the chair is in usable condition, consider donating it to an organization that helps provide household goods to low-income families. Charcoal | Charcoal NOT treated with starter fluid: Double bag and place inside the garbage cart. Charcoal treated with starter fluid is not collected by Solid Waste & Recycling. Christmas Lights & Trees | After the holidays, there are several ways to dispose of your lights & tree. The South Transfer Station will NOT accept this item. Recycle Lights:
Dispose of Christmas Tree: Place alongside garbage cart before 6:00 a.m. on your regular garbage pickup day. If tree is 6 feet or taller, you must cut in half. Ways to Recycle a Tree Yourself: Search the web under "Recycling Christmas Tree" for additional suggestions. | ||

Clothesline Poles | This item collected on recycling week only. Cut off crossbar and remove concrete from poles. Please post a sign or write on the item "For Solid Waste". Cloth Scrap | Cloth scraps are recyclable. Look for clothing recycling bins in your community. Organizations like Salvation Army and Usagain have collection bins available throughout the area for you to conveniently drop-off your unwanted textiles. Clothing | Clothes are recyclable. Drop them off at a thrift store, a donation center, or Look for clothing recycling bins in your community. Organizations like Salvation Army and Usagain have collection bins available throughout the area for you to conveniently drop-off your unwanted textiles. If they can't be reused they will be recycled. | ||
Comic Books | Check the Yellow Pages under "Comic Books" for resale opportunities or sell at a yard sale. If unable to donate, place in recycling cart. See Paper Recycling for more information. | ||
Commercial Garbage | Call and hire a private garbage service or call Solid Waste & Recycling at (612) 673-2917 to set up an appointment to determine if the commercial property is eligible for city service. | ||
Compact Discs | If reusable, erase the files and reuse the disk. Check the Yellow Pages under "Compact Discs, Tapes, Records - Retail", to check if a nearby store will buy or accept as donation. Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFL) | It is illegal to throw CFLs in the garbage due to the presence of a small amount of mercury. Some hardware stores accept residential CFLs for recycling. Call your local hardware store to see if they accept CFLs from residents. Make sure to ask if there's a fee to drop-off the CFLs. For more information on your recycling options, visit earth911.org or Hennepin County's Green Disposal Guide. Incandescent, halogen and LED lights may be placed in the garbage. | ||
Compost | This item is NOT collected by Solid Waste & Recycling or accepted at the South Transfer Station.
