Place in garbage. 

Plastic bags are not accepted with recycling.

Some grocery stores are able to take plastic bags-check with your local stores.  Save and re-use, or donate to a secondhand store for reuse.

Barbecue Grill

Small pieces can be included with grass clippings and leaves. Place in bags. Each bag must weigh less than 40 lbs. Do not use bags larger than 33 gallons.

State law prohibits disposing of yard waste with the garbage. South Transfer Station does not accept yard waste.

Yard waste collected mid-April through mid-November, weather permitting.

Batteries

DO NOT PLACE ANY BATTERY IN GARBAGE CART. ONLY Minneapolis Solid Waste & Recycling customers can place the following batteries with their recycling for pickup

How to Recycle:
Tape the positive (+) terminal of lithium ion batteries to prevent fires.  Place in a clear plastic bag and place on top of your recycling container.
 
ACCEPTED - Any type of household batteries.
Includes the following chemistries: Alkaline, carbon zinc, gel cell, lithium, lithium ion, mercuric oxide, nickel cadmium, nickel metal hydride, silver oxide, small sealed lead acid, and zinc air.
 
NOT ACCEPTED--Vehicle Lead Acid Batteries.  Boat, car, motorcycle, snowmobile, tractor, truck or other vehicle batteries are NOT collected by Solid Waste & Recycling. Disposal with garbage is prohibited.
 
Any retail store that sells lead acid batteries is required by state law to accept and recycle up to five (5) batteries at no charge; no purchase required.

Boats

Books

Bag and place inside the garbage cart.

If the book is in good shape, donate to a library, the Goodwill or a secondhand store. We can't recycle books because the binding is not recyclable, and makes the whole book not recyclable.

Bottles

Glass & Plastic containers & jugs numbered 1 through 7

   

Glass: empty food or beverage bottles and jars. Rinse.  Remove and throw away caps and lids.  Place in recycling cart. 
WE DO NOT ACCEPT BROKEN GLASS.

Plastic: bottles, containers and jugs numbered 1 through 7.
Such as: antifreeze, bleach, conditioner, cooking oil, dish detergent, distilled water, fabric softener, ketchup laundry detergent, lotion, milk, pop, syrup, water, windshield fluid, yogurt cups, pudding and fruit cups, margarine,cottage cheese, ice cream buckets, produce and deli etc…with their caps, lids & rings. Rinse and place in recycling cart.

Plastic or glass Hazardous substances like weed killer or motor oil bottles are not accepted - see below:

By State law, a person cannot place brake fluid, motor oil, oil filters, power steering fluid, or transmission fluid in the garbage, on the land, in water, down a sewer, or in the storm drain.

Boxboard: Dry food boxes such as:

Remove and throw away plastic bags. Flatten dry food boxes and place in recycling cart.  

Cardboard (Corrugated) Boxes: Flatten and place in recycling cart. 

Refrigerated Boxes/Cartons/Trays: Milk, Juice, Soup, Broth & Wine.  Place in recycling cart.

Can’t recycle: Bag and place in garbage.  We do not accept in the recycling program because it has a "wet strength additive" that makes it difficult to process. 
    Frozen cartons/trays that the contents requires heating.

Brake Fluid

Do NOT place in the garbage cart. This item NOT collected by Solid Waste & Recycling or accepted at the South Transfer Station. Disposal with garbage is prohibited.
