Garbage Carts

Minneapolis provides all customers with a garbage cart(s). All garbage must be contained inside of the cart, with lid closed. No other type garbage cart is allowed to be used. Garbage is not collected from non-City garbage carts/cans.

Large garbage carts hold 94 gallons and have a monthly disposal fee of $5. Maximum weight for cart and contents is 200 pounds.

Small garbage carts hold 22 gallons and have a monthly disposal fee of $2. Maximum weight for cart and contents is 40 pounds. ALL garbage in small carts must be bagged or the cart may not be serviced.

Your cart must be at the collection point by 6:00 AM on collection day.

You are responsible if your cart is lost or damaged.

Each cart has a serial number and is assigned to a specific address. Do not move the cart from its assigned address.

Do not paint or alter the exterior of the cart.

To protect your cart from theft or vandalism, keep it inside your yard, fence or garage until you set it out for collection.

All of your garbage must be contained inside your cart, and the lid must close.

Your cart must be clear of snow and ice in the winter. See Snow Shoveling.

Other helpful information is listed on our "Orange" tag. If neccessary, you will also receive a letter by mail explaining the garbage problem.

Have trash that doesn’t fit in your garbage cart?

See Extra Garbage or Large Item Collection.

Our crews do watch and tag for additional garbage. Customers that continually have extra garbage that does not fit in the cart will be provided another cart, and charged $5.00 per month disposal fee on the utility bill.

If possible, place the bags with raw garbage inside your cart, and those less likely to attract unwanted animals next to your cart. Squirrels and raccoons are attracted to strong smells, and will chew through plastic bags, and create a mess that you will have to clean up.

If you have Curb Collection - Important Information

City ordinance requires that your garbage cart(s) and recycling bin(s) be removed from the curb and placed behind the front line of your building by 7:00 AM the day after garbage collection. Carts not removed will be tagged and a notice will be mailed.

If compliance with City Ordinance is not met, then we will move your cart(s) and/or recycling bin(s) to a location that is in accordance with City Ordinance.  You will be charged $12 per cart, on your Utility Bill, for each cart that is moved.

Want Another Cart?

If you wish to order another cart, please call Solid Waste & Recycling at (612) 673-2917. An additional $5.00 cost per cart/per month for disposal costs will be added to your utility bill.

Before ordering another cart, consider reducing your waste. Read more about Zero Hero.

Missing Cart

Each cart has a serial number and is assigned to a specific address. If your cart is missing, take a look in your alley to see if your cart was moved or placed at another house. If you find your cart at another location, go ahead and take it back.

If you are unsure of your cart’s serial number, or have a cart that doesn’t belong to you call Solid Waste & Recycling at (612) 673-2917.

Damaged or Broken Garbage Cart

Call the Solid Waste & Recycling office at (612) 673-2917 and our staff will assist you. We do have crews that repair wheels and lids. If repair isn't completed within one month, please give us a call back.

Clean Carts Help Us Serve You Better

Good cart and bin hygiene is not just for cosmetic purposes. Washing carts regularly prevents buildup of residues, which cause pieces of garbage, or bags to stick to the inside of the cart. This slows up the collection process. Also, a dirty cart or bin is more likely to attract unwanted animals. Squirrels and raccoons are attracted to the strong smell of a dirty cart or bin and can chew through the plastic sides.

Tips for Cleaning:

Put a little soap or baking soda in the cart, put the cart on its side, turn on the hose, and spray out the dirt.

If a heavy hose is hard for you to handle, then just put a couple of scrub buckets full of soapy water in the cart, and swish the inside with your floor mop.

Report Stolen or Abused Carts and Bins

Garbage carts and recycling containers are sometimes stolen, set on fire, or used by others. Taking of a cart/bin, setting a cart or bin on fire, or use of another resident's collection point is illegal. City Ordinance 225.10 states in part: "No person shall leave, throw, or deposit, or use or permit any other person to leave, place, throw, or deposit, any substances or materials of any kind at a city solid waste collection point…for city disposal when the substances or materials were generated at a location other than the residence."

If you see any illegal use of carts or bins, anywhere in the City of Minneapolis, report this to Minneapolis 311 or our office at (612) 673-2917.  Your call will remain anonymous, by request.
