Why This Is Important

Well-lit streets and sidewalks make communities safer (both personal and traffic safety), and help people to feel safer in their own neighborhoods. That is why the City of Minneapolis encourages folks to report broken streetlights and works to promptly repair reported outages.

What's Being Done

A citywide street lighting policy has been developed to improve lighting visibility, streamline implementation processes and determine stable funding options. New technologies are being explored that would detect light problems so the City would not have to depend on a reactive system of resident complaints to identify problems and outages. New environmental light sources and designs are being tested to reduce energy consumption, address light pollution and lower overall costs.
