Unmanned Aircraft Permit

An unmanned aircraft is defined in the Minneapolis Code of Ordinances as an aircraft operated without the possibility of direct human intervention from within or on the aircraft. They are often colloquially referred to as "drones."

The City of Minneapolis requires an unmanned aircraft permit to operate an unmanned aircraft in the designated special event zone during the following periods:

While operating an unmanned aircraft, you must have a copy of the permit in your possession.

Operating an unmanned aircraft in the special event zone without a permit may result in criminal and civil penalties.

The unmanned aircraft permit application is available online. There is no fee associated with the application at this time.

A completed, signed unmanned aircraft permit application can be submitted to Fire Inspections Services online or in person at the Minneapolis Development Review counter at the Public Service Center.
