Minneapolis Proposes New Street Lighting Policy

The City of Minneapolis is in the process of developing a city-wide Street Lighting Policy, which is intended to formalize the process for implementing any new lighting projects. Minneapolis Public Works is working with the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board and other City Departments to draft the policy, which will eventually be approved by the City Council.

When finalized and approved, this policy will create a cohesive lighting system throughout the city, ensure that all areas of Minneapolis have adequate light levels for land use and safety purposes, and provide clear guidance to elected officials, residents, developers and City staff. The policy also will assist in ensuring quality, efficiency, cost effectiveness, ease of operation and maintenance.

Street Lighting Public Policy comment period

As part of the development of Street Lighting Policy, the Minneapolis Public Works Department is seeking public input and comment on the draft policy and the options for lighting fixtures. The department is also promoting a self-guided lighting tour to give the public the opportunity to see for themselves the impact that different lighting options can have.

The City has reviewed and evaluated a number of lighting fixture styles and identified several based on costs and performance standards and their aesthetics. The City would like the public’s feedback about the aesthetics of lighting options.

There are several ways you can provide input:
