Media, candidates and public invited to election briefing Nov. 1

What:              Minneapolis Elections and Voter Services will hold a forum for media, candidates, and the public to discuss activities and procedures for Election Day and night. This is a chance for media who are interested to understand how ballot counting will be done using ranked-choice voting, as well as how and when those results will be reported. City staff will also demonstrate the ranked-choice voting tabulation process using the exportable Cast Vote Record data file.

When:             6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2017

Where:            Hennepin County Central Library, 300 Nicollet Mall, Pohlad Hall

MORE:             This meeting is a chance for media and others to learn more and ask questions about the process on Election Day and night. In general, once the polls close, this is what folks can expect:

·       In ranked-choice voting, voters can rank up to three candidates for each office. After the polls close on election night, election judges will use the ballot counters to count all the ballots and tabulate all the first-choice rankings in each race. If a candidate has enough first-choice votes to win a race, those results will be known and announced on election night.

·       For races in which no candidate has enough first-choice votes to win on election night, the tabulation process will resume the following day. Beginning the afternoon of Wednesday, Nov. 6, each office on the ballot for which a winner was not determined from first-round rankings will be tabulated in ballot order, beginning with the mayor’s race. As rounds of tabulation are completed, results will be posted publicly at City Hall and online at vote.minneapolismn.gov. Media, candidates, and the public will have a chance to see a demonstration of the full tabulation process at the Oct. 29 briefing.
