Open Streets Nicollet takes place Sunday, Sept. 24

Sept. 22, 2017 (MINNEAPOLIS) Open Streets Nicollet returns Sunday, Sept. 24 — an event spanning 2 miles from Lake Street to 46th Street that gives neighbors a chance to enjoy the street in a car-free environment.

That stretch of Nicollet will be closed to motorized traffic from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Hosted by the Lyndale Neighborhood Association, Kingfield Neighborhood Association and Whittier Alliance, Open Streets Nicollet is a giant celebration with music, food and activities for everyone. The 2016 Open Streets Nicollet featured more than 100 businesses and nonprofit organizations and drew more than 15,000 people.

Staff from Public Works will have a booth during the Open Streets event to share information about the City’s 20 Year Street Funding Plan. Visitors to the booth can share feedback on how the City should prioritize funding for city streets. As part of the funding plan, Public Works developed a criteria-based process with a focus on racial and economic equity to prioritize street projects on an annual basis.

Staff from City Elections and Voter Services will also have a booth to share information about the upcoming election and ranked-choice voting.

Open Streets Minneapolis is hosted by the City of Minneapolis and is organized by Our Streets Minneapolis, formerly the Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition. Since 2011 when the Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition hosted the first Open Streets event on a 2-mile stretch of Lyndale Avenue South, the initiative has grown significantly, drawing 81,000 people to eight events in 2016.

For more information on this year’s events, visit the Open Streets Minneapolis website at www.openstreetsmpls.org.
