Walking Tour of STEP-UP South Minneapolis Worksites Will Offer Elected Officials and Program Partners a Glimpse into Interns’ Experience on the Job

Tour to Take Place Tuesday, August 1 at Four Worksites

What:       On Tuesday, August 1, the City of Minneapolis will be offering elected officials, program partners, funders, and media a glimpse into the STEP-UP youth employment program intern experience through a guided Worksite Walking Tour.  This year’s tour will focus on worksites located in South Minneapolis, which has 70 STEP-UP jobsites employing 507 interns.

The tour will start at The Center for Changing Lives at 9:00 a.m. with a welcome by Laura Beeth, Chair of the Minneapolis Workforce Council, and Anna Peterson, City of Minneapolis STEP-UP Director. Following, STEP-UP interns will guide participants on a walking tour of four worksites including: Community Bridge, Lutheran Social Services, Kaleidoscope Place, and American Swedish Institute.

Interns working at these sites will share highlights about what their job experience has been like so far this summer including projects they have worked on, connections they have made, and new skills they have gained.  At 11:15 a.m., participants will return to Lutheran Social Services for lunch.  Interns will host conversations circles during this time allowing for networking and professional information exchange.

This summer 1,666 youth and young adults aged 14-21 are being employed by STEP-UP at  213 government agencies, nonprofits, small businesses, and corporations throughout the Twin Cities metro area.  85% of the youth are of color and 48% of the youth are from immigrant families.

When:      Tuesday, August 1, 2017.

MORE:             Created in 2004, STEP-UP serves Minneapolis youth and young adults who face some of the greatest barriers to employment, including youth from families of lower economic backgrounds, youth of color, and youth with disabilities. Since the program was launched, it has provided nearly 24,000 internship opportunities. STEP-UP interns explore diverse career interests, gain valuable on-the-job skills, make strong professional connections, and prepare for meaningful careers. Before being placed into their internship, most STEP-UP participants receive between 7-14 hours of work-readiness training and complete a mock-interview that prepares them for their experience.

The City of Minneapolis STEP-UP is a program in partnership with AchieveMpls, Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED), and Project for Pride in Living.

Follow STEP-UP on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and SnapChat or by using hashtag #STEPUPMpls.

PHOTOS:         There will be photo, video and interview opportunities at each of the tour sites.  Call CPED Communications Marketing and Manager Rose Lindsay at 612.250.8661 day of event for more information.
