Open Streets Lake+Minnehaha takes place Sunday
July 21, 2017 (MINNEAPOLIS) Open Streets Lake+Minnehaha returns this Sunday, July 23 in south Minneapolis.
The event will be held on Lake Street, from Elliot Avenue to Minnehaha Avenue; and then along Minnehaha Avenue to Minnehaha Parkway from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The streets will be closed to motorized traffic. Signalized intersections will remain open.
Open Streets events feature several fun, family-friendly activities organized by local businesses and event partners, giving the community an opportunity to enjoy their neighborhoods in a car-free environment. From group yoga, live music to children’s play zones—there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
Staff from Public Works will have a booth at Lake and Hiawatha during the Open Streets event to share information about the City’s 20 Year Street Funding Plan. Visitors to the booth can share feedback on how the City should prioritize funding for city streets. As part of the funding plan, Public Works developed a criteria-based process with a focus on racial and economic equity to prioritize street projects on an annual basis.
Other upcoming Open Streets Minneapolis events include Northeast (Sunday, Aug. 6), Franklin Avenue (Sunday, Aug. 27), West Broadway (Saturday, Sept. 9) and Nicollet Avenue (Sunday, Sept. 24).
Open Streets Minneapolis is hosted by the City of Minneapolis and is organized by Our Streets Minneapolis, formerly the Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition. They are seeking route ideas for the 2018 Open Streets season. Organizations can also share their interest in being a local route host. Applications are due Sept. 21, 2017.
Since 2011 when the Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition hosted the first Open Streets event on a two-mile stretch of Lyndale Avenue South, the initiative has grown considerably, drawing 81,000 people to eight events in 2016.
