City Council approves vision, goals that will guide City work for next four years

March 28, 2014 (MINNEAPOLIS) The Minneapolis City Council today adopted the City’s vision, values, goals and strategic directions that will guide the City’s work for the next four years. City leaders set new goals every four years, resulting in clear priorities that provide long-term direction and clarify the core function of City government.

The adoption of the goals follows a public comment period in February and March when residents were asked to give their feedback on the draft vision, values, goals and strategic directions.

“We have a clear road map for the work that lies ahead the next four years,” said Mayor Betsy Hodges. “The adopted vision, values, goals and strategic directions will keep us focused on growing Minneapolis, running the city well and working to reducing the disparities that divide our communities so that everyone in Minneapolis can participate and be successful.”

“Minneapolis is a vibrant, growing city but it does have its challenges,” said Council President Barbara Johnson. “We won’t solve every issue in four years but the vision, values and goals that were adopted identify what is most important and communicate how we will work to become the city we know Minneapolis can be.”

“Now that the vision, values, goals and strategic directions have been adopted, it’s important that we use them in meaningful ways,” said Council Vice President Elizabeth Glidden. “We will be engaging the community, developing measures that will help monitor and track our progress, and reporting on the goals annually so that leaders and departments are held accountable.”

The City Council approved the following five City goals:

·         Living well: Minneapolis is safe and livable and has an active and connected way of life

·         One Minneapolis: Disparities are eliminated so all Minneapolis residents can participate and prosper

·         A hub of economic activity and innovation: Businesses, big and small, start, move, stay and grow here

·         Great places: Natural and built spaces work together and our environment is protected

·         A City that works: City government runs well and connects to the community it serves

Visit the City’s website to view the adopted vision, values, goals and strategic directions. The vision, values, goals and strategic directions are also available in Spanish, Somali and Hmong.

Beginning in April, departments will use the new four year goals, strategic directions and values to begin crafting their individual business plans.
