Downtown water main repaired, regular water service expected Wednesday

Crews also expected to complete work that will allow one lane of southbound Hennepin Avenue to open Tuesday morning

Jan. 7, 2013 (MINNEAPOLIS) City crews have finished repairs to the water transmission line that had ruptured on Thursday. Crews are in the process of disinfecting the water system and will test the water samples from the repaired transmission line Tuesday and the results are expected Wednesday. Once the water is confirmed to be safe to drink, water service from the repaired transmission line will be restored.

A backup service is currently in place, using temporary lines for the six buildings that have been without water since the Jan. 3 break. These temporary water lines allow buildings to use running water for household tasks (toilets, showers. laundry, etc). However, test results on the water quality from the temporary lines are expected tonight, so until the water is confirmed to be safe to drink anyone who wants to drink the water in those buildings is advised to boil it first. City staff will notify people in the affected buildings when the testing is complete and the water is confirmed to be safe to drink without boiling first.

Street Updates:

While northbound Hennepin Avenue is open to traffic, two blocks of southbound Hennepin Avenue have remained closed from 1st Street to Washington Avenue since the water main break. However, it is anticipated that crews will be able to open one lane of southbound Hennepin Avenue Tuesday morning in time for the morning commute. A block of 2nd Street North is also closed, from Hennepin Avenue to 1st Avenue North.

Approximately 14 million gallons of water flowed out of the system following a break in a water transmission line at a construction site Thursday afternoon. Crews have been working around the clock since that time to repair the break and restore normal water service. By Thursday evening, all but three blocks of 2nd Street North had water service fully restored, including every bar and restaurant in the area. The buildings that will be placed on a temporary water service are on 2nd Street North, between 3rd Avenue North and Hennepin Avenue.
