Downtown parking pay stations are back online

Crews repaired a software glitch that took 138 machines out of service

Feb. 6, 2013 (MINNEAPOLIS) Crews have fixed dozens of on-street parking pay stations that were out of service in downtown Minneapolis. That means drivers can once again use them to pay for parking time with credit cards or coins.

A total of 138 pay stations stopped functioning following a software update to the parking meter system Monday night. City staff worked with the makers of the pay stations to find a way to fix the glitch, and each affected pay station was rebooted individually. The software issue has been resolved, and drivers should pay for parking as usual. As always, if the pay station on a particular block isn’t working, drivers can use any nearby pay station.  

The City of Minneapolis operates a total of 617 multi-space parking pay stations, which accept payments for more than 6,000 metered parking spaces. Along with letting people pay for time with credit cards or coins, the pay stations can be programmed to have special event rates and they won’t take payments when parking spaces become “tow away zones” during critical traffic times. The machines are also solar powered, which helps save the city on replacement batteries.
