Three-alarm fire destroys south Minneapolis church

May 28, 2012 (MINNEAPOLIS) Minneapolis fire crews were dispatched to a smoke alarm call at the Walker Community United Methodist Church (3104 16th Av. S., Minneapolis) on the evening of May 27, 2012. Upon arrival crews smelled smoke and upgraded the call to request additional resources to the scene.

Crews located the fire in the attic area of the structure. In the course of fighting the fire, five Minneapolis firefighters were injured and taken to Hennepin County Medical Center. Of those three were released last night with first degree burns to their hands. Two firefighters remain at HCMC with first and second degree burns that will require additional treatment. There are no reports of civilian injuries.

The cause of this fire is under investigation. Due to the intensity of the fire, the buildings structural integrity was severely compromised and the building is being torn down this morning.

No additional information is available about the five firefighters; their names are not being released at this time to ensure that family members have been notified. There will be no additional updates until Tuesday, May 29, 2012.
