Open house to showcase design options for new Walker Library and mall
Hennepin County Library and the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board will hold a combined open house Tuesday, Sept. 27 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Hennepin County Library – Walker, 2880 Hennepin Ave. Design concepts for the park board’s land adjacent to the Walker Library and Hennepin County Library’s new Walker Library will be presented.
The new Walker Library will be constructed on the site of the current library. Planning for the new library began in 2009 with the formation of the Walker Library Community Advisory Committee. The committee developed a vision statement that provides a framework to produce a signature library that reflects and celebrates the diversity of the Uptown community.
The planning process for a new library creates an opportunity to improve The Mall, the park land located immediately north of the Walker Library. Design concepts for The Mall that will enhance connections to the library, Hennepin Avenue, the Uptown transit station, Midtown Greenway, and other Uptown surroundings will be on display. Funding for the improvements will be explored as the project progresses.
Options for the new library and the improved Mall park land have been developed by project designers in conjunction with county and park board staff and based on input generated at community engagement meetings held by Hennepin County Library and the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board.
